Axel is a little truck with big, big wheels who loves speed and adventure. In Axel the Truck Beach Race by J.D. Riley, first in a series, Axel’s going to find out if he’s fast enough to win an off-road race by the ocean against some bigger trucks. The monster trucks zoom down the sand, but Axel has a great—and very loud!—engine and the heart of a winner.
Bright illustrations by Brandon Dorman bring the fun-loving, confident Axel to life.
Axel the Truck Beach Race is an I Can Read book designed to introduce children to the exciting world of reading. It is perfect for reading aloud to a child, which is the first step in creating a great reader.

So, the grandkids love Pete the Cat books, but they burn through them like M&M's. Since about eleven or so Petes are part of the "My First I Can Read" series I decided to try more and different books from that series. Little Critter, Biscuit and the Berenstain Bears have "I Can Read" books, but you've probably already become familiar with them if you're looking here. As a side note, there are three "Otter" books by Sam Garton in the pipeline, which is pretty exciting because I really like Garton's big Otter hardbound picture books.Anyway, this book is one of the lesser known entries on the "My First I Can Read" shelf, and I took a flyer on it sight unseen. It's the story of a little monster truck who goes "Vroom", goes fast and gets muddy a lot. It's cheerful and brightly colored. Each page has about two sentences of five words each. Things like, "Axel races the big trucks." The book went over well.
Note that these are 32 pages, but the actual story/picture part is 25 pages. The book has a two page garage spread and a one page glossary of tools at the end, and that was actually interesting to look at. Also note that there is a second book, "Rocky Road", but a quarter of that book is just the first and last pages of this book with a new middle, which might be a little disappointing or confusing. I'm not sure I'd need a second Axel book unless he became a real favorite, and I'm only interested in these as good-value paperbacks.
So, a nice enough find and worth a try, but not a must have for us.

Axel the Truck Beach Race My First I Can Read eBook J D Riley Brandon Dorman Reviews
Turns out this wouldn't fit my truck but it makes a great book to read. )
My son loves the Axel books. I wish there were more out there. He is a budding reader and this is one book he doesn't mind reading a loud.
My three year old so loves monster trucks so when I saw this book I knew it was for him. He already loves books and wants to learn to read and these books are great for that. Few words to a page and short and sweet
She rated this book. I usually ask her how she feels about this book. She doesn't feel it measures up to the series we usually read at nights. It was just okay for her based on her interaction with the book.
My grandson has me read this every time I tuck him in! He loves it. Cute story of a truck that goes into the MUD gets dirty, then goes in truck wash to get clean then on way home gets dirty AGAIN! It's a boy thang!😀
This is a great book for new readers. My son, who just started 1st grade, was able to read it in about 3-4 minutes. He only needed help with one word throughout the entire book. The pictures are GREAT. If you have a kid who loves trucks this book is a must-have. There isn't too much of a story line, the book just tells you a lot about what Axel likes to do, but kids like it.
simple story for children. I originally bought it for a child who has it turned out already had a copy. I kept it for my two year old. it's a little repetitive how the name axel is continuously repeated throughout the story. I wish the author was creative and in working around that. what I love about this book is the 2-3 pages of the garage posted at the back. it has names and pics of tool found in the garage and on a the monster truck. my son constantly ask what is that and is learning what the different objects are. I wish this was on all the books in the series. it's not on speed track which we also got. do note that axel the truck - beach race and speed track start exactly the same. same wording, same graphics. I don't know if this is laziness on the author part or some reading learning tool.
